Sea to Sky on Two Wheels

Vancouver to Squamish and Back Again – Sweet Spots for Roadies

The new Sea to Sky Highway has become a mecca for roadies looking for long, uninterrupted rides with breathtaking views. Since major upgrades to Highway 99 were completed in 2010, this stretch of scenic roadway has seen more riders than ever before! And why not? You can now ride the 55km from Vancouver’s North Shore all the way to Squamish without a single stop. But if you’ve been dropped by the peloton, or just want to take your time, there are some great places to stop along the way.

Just south of Squamish, start with a cup of Java and a snack at the Galileo Coffee Company in Britania Beach. They have amazing coffee, sandwiches and sweets. Just don’t overeat if you’re Northbound since the hills start just ahead! Back on the highway, you’ll soon pass the iconic Chief on your right hand side. Towering over the town of Squamish, this freestanding granite slab draws climbers and hikers by the thousands (it’s the second largest rock in the world!). If you’ve packed your runners, and are looking for an unbelievable view of Howe Sound, take the hiking trail to the peak. Otherwise, keep pedaling – you’re almost there!

As you roll into town you may notice that Squamish’s highway frontage is peppered with fast food outlets and big box stores. But there’s so much more to this place. Turn off the highway at Cleveland Avenue and make your way into Squamish’s downtown. There you’ll find the Zepher Café and the Sunflower Bakery, 2 locally owned eateries with super fresh, super delicious snacks and meals, including veggie and vegan options.

If you’re in town on a Saturday, the Squamish Farmers’ Market is a must. The market is located at the corner of Cleveland Ave. and Victoria St. and runs every Saturday from 10am-3pm. Enjoy some home baking, farm fresh produce, entertainment, and more. Just don’t forget some kettle corn for the ride home!

Before you hit the road again, drop in to Corsa Cycles in the Station Square Mall at the corner of Cleveland Ave. and Highway 99 to restock your energy gel/drink/bar supply and to pick up a tube or 2. And if your bike needs a tweak, you’ll find experienced mechanics to get you on the road again. This massive shop is full of anything and everything related to biking! Corsa sells bikes by Cervelo, Specialized, and Trek, clothing by Giordana, Sugoi, Gore, RaceFace, Specialized, Ibex and Fox and all the parts and accessories you could ever need!

Squamish is waiting. Have a great ride up, stay for a while and drop by Corsa  to say “hi”!
